Edward Harris studied voice with John Lester at the University of Montana in Missoula, where he performed in Gianni Schicchi, Pagliacci, Cavalleria Rusticana, Street Scene, My Fair Lady, and Girl of the Golden West, (the Montana Centennial Tour). He holds degrees in music education from UM and from the University of Washington in Seattle where he performed with the Madrigal Singers and the University Chorale.

Edward has performed with the Billings Symphony Orchestra, most recently as baritone soloist for the Brahms German Requiem; as narrator for Russell Peck’s Thrill of the Orchestra, and baritone soloist in the premiere of the modern oratorio Uvacharta Bachayim. With the Billings Symphony Orchestra and Choral, he has performed as King Melchior in Amahl and the Night Visitors.

In December of 1998, he performed baritone solos in Handel’s Messiah. In 1980, he sang the role of Tuttle in the Montana Centennial opera Pamelia, by Erik Funk. He has appeared in Billings area productions of The Apple Tree, Camelot, The Fantasticks, A Funny Thing Happened On the Way To the Forum, and as Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd.

Mr. Harris made his Rimrock Opera premiere in 1999, singing the role of The Bonze in Madama Butterfly, and in November, 2001, he performed as Baron Zeta in the RO production of Merry Widow. In August of 2002 he sang the role of The Sacristan in Tosca and in March, 2003, sang as the Sprecher in The RO production of The Magic Flute. In October pf 2003,he was featured as Il Comendatore in Don Giovanni. In 2004, he reprised his role as Baron Zeta in the Opera Idaho (Boise) production of The Merry Widow and also for the Western Plains Opera Company in Minot, North Dakota. His most recent Rimrock Opera leading performance was in March 2004, when he sang the role of Father Peter in Hansel and Gretel. Fall, 2004, he covered the role of Skuller in the World Premiere of Nosferatu (music by Alva Henderson, libretto by Dana Gioia), a joint production of Rimrock Opera in Billings and Opera Idaho in Boise. He is looking forward to additional feature roles in La Traviata and La Boheme in 2005.

Mr. Harris, currently employed as Director of Music Ministries for American Lutheran Church in Billings, is very active in the Billings arts scene. The multi-talented Montanan serves as a music director, private teacher, accompanist, arranger, and vocal soloist. As a consultant, he was instrumental in helping the Billings Symphony organize the Fine Arts Day for Youth Program. He most recently served as musical director for his local church productions of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (2003)and Amahl and the Night Visitors (2004). He has also been musical director for other local productions such as Children of Eden, Nunsense, Pirates of Penzance, Mame, La Cage aux Folles, Man of La Mancha, The Mikado and Music Man (with Wally Kurth). Edward is a frequent guest in numerous local productions and fundraisers.

Ed was instrumental in the development and formation of the Rimrock Opera. After three years on its Board of Directors, he was awarded the status of RO director emeritus, and continues to serve as Chorus Master for Rimrock Opera productions.

Also well-known as a composer and arranger, Edward has well over a hundred choral works in print. Since 1986, he has received a Special Award from ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Artists and Publishers) in recognition of the scope of his work each year.

Mr. Harris also serves the Montana Music Education Association as the editor of its state journal. Ed also has a respectable career as a music educator in Billings, receiving recognition from the Billings Education Association (Teacher of the Year), and the Montana Choral Directors Association (Lifetime Achievement Award). In 2002, he was the honored recipient of the Bruce K. Meyers Award from Billings Studio Theatre, in recognition for his many contributions to community theater and art.

Ed Harris recently retired from public school music to have more time to devote to other interests: writing music, church music, performing, directing musical theater and desktop publishing. Ed’s singing career is blossoming with recent engagements with the Rimrock Opera Company and the Billings Symphony Orchestra (Brahms Requiem, April 2002).
