Dean Peterson has contributed to choral music in Montana in so many ways; as an adjudicator, guest conductor and clinician, but also in his professional service. He has been a member of the MHSA Music Committee for the past five years and helped rewrite the choral/vocal rubrics for the current festival forms. He served on the MMEA Executive board from 1998-2000 as the MCDA President, and continues to be a “go to” person for leadership and sage advice for choral educators. Last year, he was chosen to receive the "Outstanding Music Educator Award" for Montana from the MHSA/NFHS.
Dean’s choirs were known for their excellence and garnered consistent Superior ratings at music festivals. A large number of Hellgate choir members were invited each year to sing in All-State and All-Northwest groups, and earned Superior ratings with solos and ensembles at both District and State Festival. In 2004, the Hellgate Chevaliers were selected to sing at the Northwest ACDA conference in Boise.
His personal honors are testament to his ability both as a singer and as a choir teacher. In 1997, Dean was chosen to receive the National Milken Educator Award which included a $25,000 cash prize. He served as Leader/Teacher for a U.S. State Department sponsored US/China Diplomatic Initiative in a six-week student/teacher exchange with Shuda High School in Chengdu China. Dean also served as Assistant Conductor, soloist and accompanist for the Missoula Ambassador Choir tour to New Zealand and Australia, which included a performance in the Sidney Opera House. The Opera House was the second famous music hall in which Peterson had the opportunity to sing; he also sang in Carnegie Hall in 1992 with the Robert Shaw Chorale Workshop.
Dean received his Bachelors’ degrees in Music Education and Piano Performance with High Honors from the University of Montana and his Masters degree in Music Education / Kodaly Emphasis from Holy Names College in Oakland, CA. He is currently serving as Interim Director of Choirs at UM.

Rob Wells has made tremendous contributions to the success of our MMEA conferences as well as to interscholastic high school music programs in Montana. As the organizer of three All-States, the Eastern State Music Festival, and also of the District 9 Music Festival for the past ten years, his work has touched several thousand Montana students. The sheer number of students that his efforts affected is astonishing, and the fact that those efforts quite often affect our most outstanding students on such a large level is exceedingly important - especially to those students who are the future of our profession. In addition, Rob helped to plan and host numerous local musical events such as the AA choir, band and orchestra festivals. His organization of such events were always impeccably done, and done with the best interests of students in mind.
Rob is an excellent musician himself – active as a clinician, adjudicator and performer in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho. A Great Falls native, he received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Idaho, with additional studies at Louisiana State. In 1980 he began teaching high school band in Moscow, Idaho, and in 1986 Rob accepted a Middle School/Assistant High School Band Director at Billings West High School, and moved to the top band position where he remained until 2001. During his time in the classroom his students performed at an exceedingly high level. For the past ten years, Rob continued to foster excellence in his position as Music Supervisor of the Billings Public School.
Rob has been a member of MENC since 1980, and a member of MMEA and the Montana Bandmasters since 1986. He has been very active in the state music organizations, and is an intelligent, thoughtful voice in the decisions made about music education in the state of Montana. His professionalism is evident in every event that he organizes. Rob is a valued leader in music education in Montana, and is well-deserving of this recognition.
Rob will soon assume the Manager position at Eckroth Music's Billings store.

Nancy Murdock has been a music educator for thirty-two years, all teaching in Whitewater, Montana. Originally from Westport, Connecticut, Nancy was educated in Cincinnati, and graduated from Miami University of Ohio in 1979 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in music education.
Nancy's service to MMEA has indeed been distinguished. In 2003, Mrs. Murdoch received an MMEA Leadership Award, traditionally presented to outgoing presidents, for her work as MMEA Treasurer. Because of her extraordinary service to MMEA and its affiliate organizations, the Council deemed Mrs.. Murdock worthy of additional recognition, and presented an additional award to her at the 2010 All-State Gala Concert in Missoula last October.
Nancy’s career is a true success story and a role model for younger and aspiring teachers. She represents a small group of Montana teachers who have built rich music programs over many years by remaining in tiny, remote Class C schools with few resources.
Besides the rigors of creating a music program with limited resources and raising two children, Nancy has been involved in MMEA leadership for more than a decade, willingly giving hundreds of hours of volunteer time and driving thousands of miles to attend meetings and conventions. Nancy has served as Secretary/ Treasurer for MBA, MMEA State Manager, MMEA Secretary, and as MMEA President, as well as serving on the MHSA Music Committee.
Nancy made a big and challenging move from mid-west city life to a small rural ranching community. She was asked to start and develop a music program for the small school, which had never had a music program. She began a high school choir and junior high/ high school band, both of which developed and grew into performing groups that now consistently receive superior ratings at festivals, and a number of the students have participated in All-District, All-State and All-Northwest honor groups.
In June, Nancy was named Manager of the Eckroth Music Store in Bozeman, and plans to continue her service to music teachers in that capacity, as well as MMEA Past-President.
