Lowell Hickman has had a huge influence on choral teaching in Montana and throughout the region. His practical methods, passion for teaching, and wonderful personality have made him a favorite at festivals and clinics throughout the state. Although Lowell was phenomenally successful at the university level, he was closely involved with high school teaching. MMEA salutes Lowell Hickman for his outstanding service to music education in Montana.
Lowell began his forty-five year teaching career in Glendive where he taught elementary music grades 1-4, junior and senior high choral music, and high school U.S. History. In 1965 he moved to Bozeman and continued to teach junior and senior high choral music. In 1968 he joined the faculty of Montana State University’s Department of Music where his duties included teaching Music Appreciation, Voice, and conducting the MSU Choral and Montanans. Lowell led those ensembles until his retirement in July. His classes in choral conducting, choral literature and choral methods have helped prepare a generation of music educators who continue to serve the profession.
From 1968 to 1997 Mr. Hickman prepared the Bozeman Symphonic Choir for performances of many great orchestral/choral masterpieces with the Bozeman Symphony. During that period he also appeared as conductor of the Bozeman Symphony, Intermountain Opera and the Bozeman Municipal Band. Mr. Hickman also produced and conducted stage productions at both the high school and university level. Throughout his career Mr. Hickman has remained active as a baritone soloist in recital and oratorio.
Lowell is a graduate of Minot State College and the University of Iowa. He has been an active member of ACDA, MCDA, MENC, NATS, and is an honorary member of Kappa Kappa Psi band honorary.
Lowell’s wife Laurie is the band director at Sacajawea Middle School in Bozeman and president-elect of the Montana Bandmaster’s Association. Daughter Suzanne is a graduate of Lawrence Conservatory and Michigan State University and is Professor of Clarinet at Wichita State University. The Hickmans’ younger daughter Kathryn is a graduate of Western Washington University and employed by the U.S. Forest Service, and their son Steven is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and serves aboard the U.S.S. Sampson as a Lt. J.G.

John Schuberg retired in June from his position with Missoula County Public Schools after a twenty-eight year career, leaving his mark of excellence on every position he held. Often described as a “Pied Piper,” John had a magical connection with his students. His Rattlesnake Middle School bands involved the majority of the students in the school and far outgrew the band facilities. John always encouraged young directors and is highly sought after as a clinician, mentor and adjudicator. MMEA wishes to thank John Schuberg for his invaluable service to his profession, some highlights of which appear below.
John taught applied saxophone at Lane Community College (2 years), high school band in Belt, Montana (5 years), middle school band in Missoula, Montana (20 years), and beginning band in Missoula (3 years). During his tenure at Rattlesnake Middle School, his 7th/8th grade band was invited to perform at All-Northwest MENC conferences on four occasions.
John is an Oregon native with two undergraduate degrees in Music Performance & Education from the University of Oregon. He earned his Master’s Degree from the University of Montana in 1980. John received the Outstanding Educator Award from the Dufresne Foundation in 1985, the Friends of Youth Award in 1989, and was nominated for teacher of the year several times. He has been active as an adjudicator and clinician throughout his teaching career.
John’s musical arrangements for Middle School Concert Band, All-City Jazz Band, Red Wave Marching Band, and All-City Winds have been used extensively throughout the Missoula School District for the last twenty years. His Solo and Duet Collections for all instruments have been the standard Solo Day texts in the Missoula area since 1992.
John’s wife, Maggie, is Associate Professor of Flute at the University of Montana. They have two children – Benjamin (22) and Jennifer (20). John’s latest contribution to the Missoula teaching community are his former students who have just recently entered the teaching profession – Chad Reep (Big Sky High School band director), Randy Zschaechner (Porter Middle School band director), & Dale Olinger (Lolo Middle School).
